ABOUT THE PROPERTY

Anque Wuji Cliff Sea View Hotel: A new cliff above Erhai Lake

On the cliffs of Shuanglang, a new Dali hotel keeps the lake in view from morning to night.

Newly opened above the water at Shuanglang, in Dali, this is a hotel for people who came for the lake and nothing else. Its rooms face the water directly, so the day's light, from the first haze over the mountains to the last of the evening, belongs to the room. The signature suite spreads across a wide terrace with a 270-degree view of the lake.

01 — The residence

The rooms are generous, open-plan suites with the lake as the main furnishing. Most look straight out across the water, and the largest of them, the flagship suite, turns a 270-degree arc of terrace around the view. Interiors stay deliberately neutral so that the shifting colour of the water, green in the morning and amber by dusk, does the work.

02 — On the cliff

Outdoors, the hotel makes the most of its position on the cliff edge. There is a fire pit and lounging terrace where the evening settles in slowly, and the public rooms open onto the same long view. A welcome ceremony, with hot and cold towels, drinks and a small glass of sparkling wine, sets the tone on arrival, and a portrait photography session can be arranged to take the setting home with you.

03 — The table

Meals take place on terraces that look across the water, with the mountains of Yunnan as the backdrop. The in-house restaurant, Yimen, serves the region's produce simply and well, and the hotel's own coffee, Wuji, is poured throughout the day. Sunset is the hour worth planning around; the whole cliff turns colour as the light goes.
